eSport League of Legends fills arena in Stockholm to watch a playoff final.

The crowd erupts, fans are screaming at their televisions and laptops, and players begin to celebrate. This may sound like your typical sporting event, but it is not.

This is the scene of an eSport event. eSports is essentially the competitive play of video games.

The community, once small and unpopular, has seen massive strides recently and is picking up steam.

Professional organizations such as the Golden State Warriors and the New York Yankees have began getting involved and investing in eSport teams.

This is one of the main reasons many companies such as Newzoo, a gaming and technology company, are projecting eSports to grow 41 percent  this year and be worth over a billion dollars by 2020.

Much of this growth has to do to the fact that technology is becoming a bigger part of everyday lives. It is becoming more common for kids to choose playing video games over playing sports.

Sites such as Twitch allow gamers and companies to stream and broadcast gameplay, tournaments, and anything involved with their game.

This makes it easier for people to promote, and viewers at home have easy access to all the information.

CEO of Newzoo Peter Warman said this about eSports, “With the arrival of live streams and events, gaming has entered the realm of broadcasters and media that can now apply their advertising business model to a market previously out of reach for them.”

The business world is no longer overlooking video games and is beginning to realize the amount of money to be made off of it.

For instance games such as League of Legends and Counter Strike Global Offensive have fans traveling the world to watch teams compete.

Not only that, but there are thousands at home tuned in as well, and this is why famous investors such as Mark Cuban have poured money into games like these.

eSports may not be at the level of sports such as basketball and soccer currently, but the future seems to be looking up for the once ignored idea of competitive gaming.
