Taylor Swift’s new song “Look What You Made Me Do,” with its repetitive chorus and hidden messages made its way to the top of the charts after its release on Aug. 24th. Many of her loyal fans enjoy the song, seeming to find an empowering theme, however a closer look at the lyrics reveals a message that is quite the opposite.
The way that Swift chose to express herself sounds not so empowering, but rather childish and immature, like an elementary school kid in a playground fight. It is almost as if the song was not written to sound appealing; it was instead written with the intent of telling the target of the song “I don’t like you,” as she says in the first verse. It seems that the only purpose of the song is to make that statement.
Although it is catchy, it does not hold the attention of the listener well because the monotonous chorus is so dull. It is not danceable or structurally thought out. In the entire song, there is no crescendo. The intro has an amazing build up, but goes into the first verse with no pay off, leaving the listener disappointed and longing for more. Overall, most people either love the new song or miss Swift’s old songs. Either way, that style might not be coming back. The lyrics say that the old Taylor Swift is dead, but the new one isn’t so great either.
