Dear Readers,
As young writers, finding a consistent audience for our creations is oftentimes a difficult task. We spend hours interviewing sources, formulating stories and designing layouts only to occasionally be met with a small handful of loyal readers. Exposure is key to becoming known in the journalism world, and luckily for the newspaper staff of The Clipper, this year’s publications will be given a more immense magnitude of exposure.
For the first time, the Seaman Clipper will be printed as an additional insert into The Topeka Capital-Journal (cjonline.com). Not only will the entire Seaman community be able to view our newspaper, the city of Topeka as a whole will be able to as well. This gives myself, my staff writers, and my adviser the opportunity for our work to be seen on a larger scale, increasing awareness of the issues and events taking place within our school district.
While this is a great opportunity for the newspaper staff, the subjects of our news stories will have just as much new exposure. If we highlight students in a feature story, a few hundred readers may view it. Now, thousands of members of the Topeka community have the chance to learn about the actions of the students of Seaman High.
On behalf of all the publication students I would like to thank the district for allowing this opportunity to occur. Our writers now have the chance to voice their opinions to a larger audience, which is an honor to have considering we are still in high school.
I am very much looking forward to see the results this new publication method has on the amount of readers of our paper. My goal is that our newspaper staff can bring school and district issues to the forefront by using the new mass distribution of our paper to educate others on happenings within the Seaman community.
