At the beginning of August, many Seaman grads moved into their new dorms to start their freshman year of college. They have some advice they would like to share with this year’s seniors on meal plans, roommates, and social life.
“One girl on my floor broke her ladder climbing into her bed so beware of the freshman 15,” says business major Molly Mulqueen. “Always wear shoes when you go to the shower and don’t get an unlimited meal plan because you’re not going to want to eat there for every meal, so it’s a waste of money.”
“Enjoy high school because college classes are hard, and you don’t have a lot of free time,” says Pre-Med major Brenlee Yingling. “Don’t be too quick to get away from Topeka and your family because adjusting to college is hard and you’ll realize you miss your hometown and family more than you’d think.”
“Always make sure to bring an umbrella and don’t ever be afraid to ask questions; most people are nice and will point you in the right direction,” says journalism major Tory Darting. “Join clubs, especially if it’s something you’ve never tried before. I am in the Quidditch club and it is so much fun and so cool.”
“Also, take a reasonable number of credit hours. You can’t manage 20 hours as a freshman,” adds Mulqueen.”Apply for all the scholarships, go to class, and never mention that your high school’s name is Seaman. You will be teased relentlessly.”
“I’d tell seniors to pick their college for themselves. Don’t worry about the cost so much or where your friends are going; all that matters is that you’re happy,” says education major Emma Sauer. “Everyone has student loans, and college is the easiest place to make friends. Just go somewhere that makes you feel at home.”
